Fenway Golf Club in New York

One of the greatest golf destinations anywhere in the world is Westchester County in the US state of New York and one of the area's lesser known gems is Fenway Golf Club.

Situated about a 40-minute drive from central Manhattan in New York City, Fenway doesn't get the same plaudits as neighbouring Winged Foot and Quaker Ridge but is does have something in common with both of them.

Fenway, Quaker Ridge and both the East and West courses at Winged Foot were all designed by famed American golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast.

In the video below, we shine a light on some of the notable holes at Fenway.

The par-five third features a massive cluster of bunkers which most golfers will have to negotiate in the lay-up area.

A focal point of the course comes at the eighth and 12th greens which sit very close to one another, separated by a single bunker with a grass island in the middle.

The course also has a couple of intriguing short par-fours including the uphill dogleg right 15th which features an unusually slender and elongated green.

There are distinct differences between the opening and closing nines at Fenway.

The front nine is perfect is you're only looking to play a handful of holes because the second, fifth, sixth and ninth greens are all situated very close to the grand clubhouse.

The back nine features more elevation changes and is more typical in the sense that it doesn't return close to the clubhouse until the final hole.

Many of the greens are protected in front by false fronts or steep run-offs and, if we can give you one tip for playing Fenway, take plenty of club into those greens.
